What do you want to do when the quarantine is over? I like to discuss this with one of my sisters during my daily walk. It usually involves a trip. My oldest sister is always up for an adventure. Middle is an introvert and prefers to stay at home with her family but doesn't like to miss anything. It's a constant dilemma for Middle to participate in fun events but still stay home where she feels most comfortable. Oldest, on the other hand, will leave her family at the first offer of a trip without even hearing the end of the sentence of where I want to go.
"Want to go--"
"YES!"
"--to Oklahoma with me on a business trip?"
She will go anywhere. She prefers to stay at least 2 nights and is frequently annoyed that my work travel is selfishly short for her liking.
We have a dream to retire in three condos on the beach in Florida and on our daily walks we've been daydreaming about when to go. Oldest got the idea to go to Destin, although Middle disagrees. Destin sounds a little too much like Desitin for her liking and she doesn't want to think about diaper ointment during our retirement. Which prompted us to say die-ah-per, repeatedly, as our great aunt and grandma use to pronounce it.
Oldest is the oldest, and, if you have an oldest sister you know, she's in charge. If she says Destin then Destin it is. Middle continues to murmur "Desitin" whenever the city is referenced but, sadly, she knows it's a moot point to fight it. Oldest will coo and smile and love her way into getting exactly what she wants by fooling us into thinking it is the best option. Pretty soon Middle will claim Destin was her idea all along and declare that sounding like Desitin is to our benefit. We will be getting our condos at a discounted rate since we don't have to compete with those idiots who write off the city based on the name alone.
Today I told Oldest it was time to start looking at buying our condos. This staying in one house business has gone on long enough.
"It's not so much that I don't like my current house or that it is too small," I told her, "it's just that I want more of them."
She agreed, as loving sisters do, to crazy things said during the quarantine.
We decided the best time to go would be July, with the smallest risk of getting our trip canceled. To explore the area thoroughly we will need a car, to which she asked, "Will we be driving?"
From the west coast to Florida.
That is how much this poor girl wants out of her house. She would drive 3000 miles to go to Destin, Florida in July. Hearing the question made me worry for my dear sister. Is she ok? Her depression must be wearing on her. I have got to get her out of there.
I gently suggested that maybe a trip to Santa Barbara would be a little more reliable and perhaps when the California beaches open up again we can stick a little closer to home. To which she heartily agreed before I even finished the sentence.
